After decades of working for other wineries, Winemaker Scott Harvey and his wife, Jana, a wine marketing executive, founded their winery in 2004. Their “Jana” brand is devoted to Napa’s top varietals, including Cabernet.

“Being European trained and having the renowned Beaulieu Vineyard Winemaker, Dr. Richard Peterson, as a mentor, I developed a Cabernet wine style similar to that of the great BV Cabernets of the 1950s and 60s,” says Scott. “That’s at below 14% alcohol with a good lower pH that will make the wine last for years and years. That also makes the wine delicate enough to go well with food without overpowering it.”

Jana wines are named to convey the romance and passion Scott feels for his wife, Jana, and also for the creation of the wines that they love to share. The Cathedral label celebrates Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, where Scott proposed marriage to Jana. “This is our very, very best wine,” says Scott of the Cathedral bottlings.

“Still youthful yet with the ability to age well until 2025. Definitely a 20-year wine. Color holding with developed extractive soft tannins. The once young pyrazines have developed into a rich complexity and are no longer noticeable. Rich and full on the palate, one gets hints of steak tartar, black currants and dark fruit. Oak is balanced but not overly noticeable with a character of light tree bark. Andre Tchelistcheff said that if you can detect the oak in the wine, you have lost the wine.  Wine finishes on a long, bright cherry and spice note.” —Scott Harvey, Winemaker

Winemaker’s Notes

Martin Vineyard in the Coombsville area of Napa Valley supplied all the fruit. Dr. Martin planted this vineyard on our recommendation. It was a cold growing season with a larger than normal crop. Luckily, we had a long, dry and warm fall allowing for a late harvest, which produced ripe grapes developing dark, full- flavored, balanced Cabernet. The oak treatment was just enough to give the wine complexity, but not to be overly noticeable.
